That’s an actual quote, by the way. By feminist Betty Friedan, in her book “The Feminine Mystique”.
While I don’t like the picture due to false equivalency, that "comfortable concentration camps" is an actual phrase used by a feminist is hilariously sad.
I had to actually look this up because I didn’t really believe it could possibly be that stupid.
But it is.
They actually fucking equated that to being oppressed under a nazi regime.
oh my fucking lord
Yeah, I’m with eliminativism here. It’s a bit propagandistic for comparing some of the worst horrors men go through to a rather average life for women at the same time.
But yes, the fact that that phrase was used and that feminists actually believed and continue to believe the boredom brought on by being part of the leisure class with no emphasis on productive labor is in any way equivalent to torture and genocide is patently insane.
-MephIs the entire text after the word ‘patriarchy’ the quote, or just the ‘comfortable concentration camps’ part. Because while that’s awful enough on its own, the sentence in its entirety is so ridiculously stupid that I can’t believe anyone would have actually written it.
Only the ‘comfortable concentration camps’. The stupidity of the whole sentence is part of what I disliked about the image in the first place.
An actual quote from ‘Feminine Mystique’:
”[…]the women who ‘adjust’ as housewives, who grow up wanting to be ‘just a housewife,’ are in as much danger as the millions who walked to their own death in the concentration camps[…] “
"Progressive Dehumanization: The Comfortable Concentration Camp” is the title of chapter 12 of the book.
The analogy is used several times more, she also equates fathers and husbands with SS guards (Friedan references an account of a Jewish woman shooting a guard, implying that to liberate themselves, wives should shoot their men - it is a bit open for interpretation). Friedan later refused to comment on the usage of the analogy, which gives the impression that she might have gotten second thoughts. Still, the 1960s were a wild time for feminist literature.
